Monthly Wellness Activities & Support Groups Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Physical Therapists evaluate physical problems to help increase or maintain a patient's muscle strength and endurance, restore and increase range of motion in joints, increase coordination, decrease pain, decrease swelling and inflammation of joints, promote healing of soft tissue, prevent contracture and deformity of limbs, alleviate walking problems, educate patients and families about their care and stress reduction. Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Cardiac Rehabilitation is a comprehensive coronary care service available to heart patients on various levels. An exercise program allows participants to rotate through exercise stations including a treadmill and an air-dyne bicycle. As the participant exercised, they are monitored for signs or symptoms which indicate progress or problems that may arise during exercise. Cardiac Rehab participants receive the direct care of physicians, physical therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, and registered nurses. Cardio-Pulmonary Cardio-Pulmonary Diagnostic programs at WMMC include:
Radiology CT (Computerized Tomography) is an x-ray technique using a special scanner and computer to create cross-sectional images of your body. The scan allows your physician to examine three-dimensional features of any part of your body and can help lead to early diagnosis of diseases such as colon cancer, brain tumors, or vascular diseases. Mammograms are used to detect tumors which cannot be discovered in any other way. Those whose cancer is caught early enough and localized to the breast at the time of diagnosis have a 5 year survival rate of 96%. Mammography is an important technology in which we can detect cancer early and save lives. Ultrasound is the three-dimensional use of sound waves to show anatomy and flow patterns in veins and arteries in various disease states without invasive radiation. An ultrasound exam of the carotid arteries can be used for patients who are high risk of having a stroke. If a problem is found, immediate treatment can help prevent a stroke. A vascular ultrasound is useful in the study of deep veins in the leg where deadly blood clots can develop. Valves, muscles and heart chambers can be examined to see if they are functioning properly. In obstetrics, physicians can view the fetus in detail and the child's growth can be evaluated and monitored. Nuclear Medicine uses radio pharmaceuticals injected into the body which go into different organs to supply information as to their size, function, and blood supply. Laboratory The laboratory consists of a variety of departments. Microbiology tests specimens of urine, stool and blood, as well as vaginal and throat swabs to isolate infecting agents such as bacteria, fungus, molds, and parasites. The isolated agents are then exposed to a variety of antibiotics to determine which drug is most effective for treatment. Virology collects and sends out blood specimens to identify viral infecting agents such as HIV, rabies and viral meningitis. Blood Bank identifies blood types and performs tests to determine the compatibility of blood for transfusion. Other tests include Rh typing and testing. Hematology tests blood specimens to determine the type and number of red and white blood cells and platelets. This lab also determines the ability of a patient's blood to clot. Chemistry provides information about the concentration of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats found in the blood and other body fluids including cerebral spinal fluid and urine. Serology collects and sends out blood specimens to determine exposure to infectious agents such as hepatitis, syphilis, arthritis, and lupus. Emergency or STAT staff perform a few of the necessary tests from all the other labs to help physicians during life-and-death situations to determine a patient's immediate status and required treatment. Emergency Outpatient Services Weskota Memorial has highly trained medical providers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These professionals use modern high-tech equipment to assist when emergencies arise. Chemotherapy, IV antibiotic therapy, injections and blood administration are some of the treatments available on an outpatient basis through the emergency room. Same Day Surgery Same Day Surgery involves surgical procedures completed on an outpatient basis which generally do not require further hospitalization. Patients requiring Same Day Surgery report to the hospital a minimum of an hour before surgery is scheduled, have the surgery performed, spend time in the recovery area, and are discharged that same day. Surgery WMMC's surgical suites are equipped to provide modern, high quality care. By having surgery at WMMC, patients can recover right here at home, where family and friends can visit, and their primary care physician can provide follow-up care. Specialty Clinics The Specialty Clinics provides physician in such specialties as cardiology, orthopedics, surgery, and urology. These clinics provide specialist care for patients in the WMMC area, thus limiting the need to travel outside the community for specialty healthcare services.
